The UK just announced a full ban on social media for kids under 16, effective spring 2027. 

Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, and X will be blocked.

Canada is racing to follow with Bill C-34 – the “Safe Social Media Act” – pushing the same under-16 restriction.

Is it the government’s job to age-restrict social media? Moreover, is this about protecting kids? Or is it a backdoor for mandatory age verification and digital ID for everyone?
