A Sikh man wearing a kirpan was recently asked to leave a GoodLife Fitness gym in Windsor, Ontario after another member raised safety concerns. The employee was simply enforcing common sense (and GoodLife backed their staff.)

In December 2025, 18-year-old British student Henry Nowak was stabbed to death in Southampton, UK by Vickrum Singh Digwa – who was carrying two “ceremonial” Sikh knives.

Australia has already moved to ban kirpans in schools after similar stabbings.

Ceremonial or not, Kirpans are sharp, bladed weapons. Recent tragedies around the world prove they represent a clear danger to public safety when worn openly in gyms, schools, airports, and everyday public spaces.

Religious freedom cannot come at the expense of everyone else’s safety. Other dangerous items don’t get a free pass because of faith.

It’s time for Canada to follow Australia’s lead and ban the kirpan in public. No more special exemptions that put innocent people at risk.
