After the recent King’s visit to Canada, the monarchy debate is heating up again.
Those in favour of cutting ties claim that remaining a constitutional monarchy, with the British monarch as head of state, is a vestige of colonialism and hinders Canada’s full sovereignty.
There are also significant costs associated with the monarchy: royal visits, security, and maintaining the symbolic role. And younger Canadians feel little connection to the British monarchy and its history.
Those in favour of remaining claim the monarchy is a unifying symbol, representing the country’s history and identity, and providing a sense of stability and continuity that rises above partisan politics.
Canada’s membership in the Commonwealth, a group of nations with ties to the Crown, provides diplomatic and cultural advantages.
Recent polls suggest more than half of Canadians now support cutting ties with the monarchy. What do you think?
